What an end-of-life doula does, and what we do not

Scroll

People often ask me what an end-of-life doula actually does. It is a fair question. The role is still new to many families, and the name can sound unfamiliar.

Here is a plain answer. I am a trained, non-medical companion who walks beside you and your family before, during, and after a death. I bring calm, steady presence to a time that can feel overwhelming.

What I do

  • I help you think through your wishes and put them into words, from comfort to legacy.
  • I sit with the hard conversations that families tend to avoid.
  • I offer a calm presence at the bedside, so no one has to keep watch alone.
  • I support caregivers with practical help and a little rest, because they need care too.
  • I help with letters, recordings, and life-review projects that hold a person’s story.
  • I guide families through the first steps after a death, gently and clearly.

Most of all, I make space for what each family needs. Sometimes that is planning. Sometimes it is simply company in a quiet room.

What I do not do

I am not a nurse, a doctor, or a hospice provider. I do not give medical care, manage medication, or make clinical decisions. That work belongs to your medical and hospice team, and they are essential.

I work alongside that team, never in place of it. I am not a lawyer or a financial advisor either, though I can help you find the right people for those questions.

I am not here to push any single way of doing things. Your values lead. I follow.

How it fits together

Think of it this way. Your medical team cares for the body. I help care for everything around it, the planning, the feelings, the family, and the meaning. Together, the whole person is held.

If any of this sounds like what your family needs, I would be glad to talk. A short, free conversation is the easiest place to start.
